I have seen this mistake many times; a lot of folks turn off their A/C when going out for work. They think that if no one is home, the A/C should be off. The main reason why we should not turn off our A/C is that the house will get too hot and the amount of energy wasted to cool down the temperature by the time, we come back from work will be more than if we just leave the A/C in AUTO.
Believe it or not, when you keep the A/C unit in AUTO and not at an extremely low temperature is better. The A/C unit will work from time to time to keep the house at a certain temperature. I suggest keeping it at 77° F. When coming back home from work, do not adjust your thermostat too suddenly, adjust the temperature in small reductions, maybe 2 degrees per hour. If you lower the temperature at once, then the A/C will not stop until reaching the desired temperature and will consume all the energy you tried to save all day long.
